Spiritual Care Services

If you’re a clergy member or a spiritual care provider, share your compassion, support, and sensitivity with patients and their families. Become a member of the volunteer Spiritual Care Services team at Montage Health’s Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.

Role of chaplain volunteers

As a volunteer chaplain, you will:

  • Provide compassionate, respectful support to patients and their families, helping them draw on spiritual, religious, cultural, and philosophical resources to cope with an illness, treatment decisions, and healing
  • Offer spiritual care that preserves the dignity of each patient
  • Serve as a liaison with local faith communities
  • Provide grief and bereavement support, on-call crisis support, and (with special training) visit assigned hospital units consistently
  • Suggest resources for treatment decision making

Volunteer requirements

To be eligible, you must:

  • Represent a specific faith tradition and a local congregation
  • Be formally educated, licensed, or ordained in your tradition
  • Be in good standing in the local faith community
  • Have experience in a hospital or healthcare setting or relevant education, such as clinical pastoral education (CPE) credits

Tradition-specific volunteers

If you are a tradition-specific chaplain or volunteer lay leader (such as a Eucharistic minister, Stephen minister, or missionary), you may visit patients who have requested tradition-specific pastoral, ritual, or sacramental support. You must provide:

  • Proof of your pastoral credentials (training and supervision)
  • Letter of recommendation from a leader of your local faith community and their yearly confirmation of your continued appointment to serve in your role

Chaplain hours

Chaplains are available to patients and families Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., excluding holidays. On-call chaplains are available for emergency needs at all other times.
