Hematology
Find care for blood and bone marrow diseases from a doctor who specializes in these conditions. Skilled hematologists serve on the medical staff at Montage Health’s Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.
Symptoms and conditions
Call your doctor if you bruise or bleed easily, get sick often, or feel weak or tired without explanation. You may need lab tests to check for a hematological condition, such as:
- Anemia and other blood cell and platelet disorders
- Blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which slow or block blood flow and cause other health problems
- Bleeding problems, such as hemophilia and von Willebrand disease
- Leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma (blood and bone marrow cancers)
Treating blood disorders
If you’re diagnosed with an illness affecting your blood or bone marrow, you’ll receive a personalized treatment plan. Depending on your specific condition, your care will address the root cause and/or focus on managing symptoms, like pain. Your doctor may recommend:
- Anticoagulants (blood thinning medications) to treat or prevent harmful blood clots
- Blood product transfusion to replace lost blood cells or plasma
- Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, which will be overseen by your hematologist and oncologist (cancer doctor) working closely together
- Clotting factor replacement to help blood clot better, so you stop bleeding more quickly
- Growth factors that stimulate your bone marrow to make more blood cells
- Iron or vitamin supplements for anemia
- Medications to control pain, as from sickle cell anemia
